Victoria's draft Animal Care and Protection Bill is heading to Parliament, and it's our best chance in a generation to overhaul how animals are treated across our state. The Bill has the potential to set a new standard — but only if our elected representatives hear loud and clear that their constituents demand real, enforceable protections.
Currently, the draft risks falling short. Weak enforcement, loopholes for industry, and a lack of independent oversight could leave animals — whether companion, farmed, or wild — with the same inadequate protections we've had for years. That's not good enough for a modern Victoria.
Here's what we're calling for: a fully independent Animal Welfare Authority, equal protections for all animals, welfare prioritised over profit, clear enforceable standards for food, water, shelter, and veterinary care, and significantly higher penalties to deter cruelty.
